Public beta · Avalanche Fuji test network

Money that crosses
the gap.

Pay and get paid in USDC with no signal at all, by QR code or Bluetooth. The receiver can see on the spot how safe the payment is, and it settles on Avalanche as soon as any phone reconnects.

Why Portage

Digital money stops working when the network does.

Markets, clinics and bus stages run on cash because the signal is patchy, power cuts take towers down, and sometimes the internet is switched off. A digital wallet that needs a connection at the moment of payment fails exactly when people need it.

Paying and settling, apart

Portage separates paying from settling. The payment is signed on the phone and handed over directly. Settlement waits for the first phone, payer or receiver, that finds a connection. Between the two, the money is carried, like a boat carried over land between two waters.

A dhow under a stone bridge, carrying a coin. A portage is the stretch where a boat is carried over land between two waters.

Offline

The payer scans it and confirms with a fingerprint. The signed payment goes back by QR or Bluetooth.

Honest about "pending"

Portage never calls a payment settled early. It says pending until the chain's finalized block confirms it.

Setting up

Get started in minutes.

Install the app, keep your recovery words safe, and move some USDC to your offline balance. Then pay anywhere, signal or not.

Step 1

Create your wallet

The app makes your keys inside the phone's secure hardware. Write your 12 recovery words on paper: only you can restore them.

Step 2

Fill your offline balance

Move USDC from your main balance into your own vault. That is the money you can spend with no network.

Step 3

Pay and get paid

Scan a code, confirm with your fingerprint, show the payment. It settles when either phone reconnects.

Know what you're accepting

Every payment says how safe it is.

An offline payment can't be checked against the chain at that moment. So Portage doesn't hide the risk: each payment carries a level, in words and colour, and the receiver's own limits decide what they accept.

Unsecured

Paid from the sender's main balance. It settles only if the money is still there, so small amounts from people you know.

Vault-backed

Paid from money locked in the sender's offline vault. The vault can't be emptied quickly, so the receiver has time to settle.

Bonded

Vault-backed, plus a bond. If the sender's key is ever used to cheat, the bond pays back those cheated.

Reserved

Money set aside in advance for one receiver, such as a shop. Only that receiver can be paid from it, in full, until it ends.

Simple

One wallet, with or without a signal.

Your keys, your vault, and payments that wait for the network instead of failing without it.

Safety by design

Your keys. Your vault. Rules no one can bend.

Non-custodial

No company holds your money. The vault contract has no owner, no admin and no upgrade switch. Only your key can move your funds.

Keys in the phone's hardware

Payment keys are made inside the phone's secure hardware and unlocked with your fingerprint or PIN. They never leave the device.

Limits the chain enforces

The vault limits each payment and only releases money after a waiting period you choose. Cheating is provable on chain and punished from the cheater's bond.

Honest about "pending"

Portage never calls a payment settled early. It says pending until the chain's finalized block confirms it.

Open and verifiable

The app, contracts and services are open source. The contracts' code is published on the block explorer, and test vectors keep every implementation in agreement.

Works with no gas token

You hold only USDC. Relayers pay the network fee and take a small, fixed fee in USDC. If every relayer is down, rescue mode lets you act on your own.

For programmes

Cash-like payments for aid and community programmes.

Distribute stablecoins to people who live with patchy coverage, and let them spend at local shops without waiting for a signal. Reserve money for registered vendors so those payments are always good, and reconcile everything from public chain data.

  • Reservations for vendors: always paid in full
  • English and Swahili, readable in direct sunlight
  • Works on entry-level Android phones (Android 10 and later)
  • No custody: the programme never holds beneficiaries' keys

Field rehearsal plan

  1. Ten beneficiaries and three vendors, test tokens
  2. A day of purchases with data switched off
  3. Vendors settle the next morning at the nearest signal
  4. Fix the top three problems before real funds

Questions

Frequently asked

Does Portage hold my money?

No. Your money is in your own wallet and your own vault contract. There is no admin key, no upgrade and no pooled account. Portage the company cannot move, freeze or recover your funds. Only your recovery words can restore your wallet.

How can a payment work with no internet?

The payer's phone signs the payment and hands it to the receiver as a QR code or over Bluetooth. The receiver's phone checks the signature and the sender's vault offline, then keeps the payment until a connection appears and settles it on Avalanche.

What if someone tries to pay twice with the same money?

Each payment says how safe it is. Vault-backed money can't be withdrawn quickly, so receivers have time to settle. Double spending is provable on chain: the cheater's bond is taken and pays back those cheated. Reserved payments can't be double spent at all.

What does it cost?

A small fixed fee in USDC per settled payment, paid to whoever submits it to the chain. You never need a separate gas token. The current beta uses test USDC, so nothing costs real money.

Is it safe to use real money now?

Not yet. The beta runs only on the Fuji test network. Real money comes after an independent audit of the contracts and a field rehearsal.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Restore your wallet on a new phone with your recovery words. The app finds your vault on chain and moves it to a new payment key on the new phone.
